One may acquire Citizenship in the United States by either birth or Naturalization.
- Birth: Birth in the United States generally confers citizenship on an individual. Under Title 8, the United States is defined as the continent United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands of the United States (8 U.S.C. 1101 (a)(38)).
- Naturalization: Generally, an individual may become a naturalized citizen after being a legal permanent resident of the United States for five (5) years (or three (3) if living with ad married to a U.S. Citizen)
